PC Software User Aptitude Test

Purpose

To evaluate a candidate's practical and analytical skills required for the effective use of PC's. It does not measure programming aptitude.

General Description

This test is ideal for evaluating the potential of candidates with or without prior PC experience.

Job criteria measured

All required skills and abilities necessary for PC use:
bulletUnderstanding of supplier manuals
bulletProblem solving skills
bulletAbility to understand and use common spreadsheet programs such as Lotus
bulletAbility to understand and use database concepts
bulletInterpretation of specifications of the type found in vendor manuals
bulletAbility to work accurately and rapidly
bulletAbility to sustain concentration and solve in-depth problems
bulletAttention to detail

Test administration

The test requires only clerical supervision to administer. Once begun, it is self-instructive for candidates, requiring 75 minutes to complete.

Evaluation

The overall rating is based on scores according to the following table:

Score Recommendation
90 - 100% Excellent
80 - 89% Very Good
70 - 79% Good
60 - 69% Limited Use
59% or less Very Low

Validation Information

April, 1987: Scores on the PC Software User Aptitude Test were found to be highly predictive of levels of learning of programming languages.  It was not predictive of success in computer literacy courses, and appears to be highly correlated with problem solving in the PC environment. This validation report was prepared by George Jacobsen, George Burstein & Parviz Partow-Navid of California State University.
