Purpose

To evaluate the analytical and reasoning skills of potential candidates for administrative positions.

General Description

The test, from which a four-page report is provided to the client, consists of three problems which evaluate logical ability, ingenuity and reasoning.

bulletAbility to follow complex administrative procedures and analyze them to supply specific requirements

Test administration

The test requires only clerical supervision to administer and takes 68 minutes to complete. Candidates should be given the tests in a relatively quiet environment. More than one person can be tested at one time. It is important that the timed sections be timed to the second. Once the candidate begins the test is self-instructive.

Sample question (segment)

You are about to walk across an intersection, which contains traffic lights. If an intersection may only be crossed on a green light, describe the procedure to cross the street.

C           Go back to the first statement.
D           If the traffic light is green, skip the next statement.

Validation Information

April, 1998: Scores on the Analytical Reasoning Skills Battery were found to be highly predictive of levels of learning of programming languages. It was not predictive of success in computer literacy courses, and appears to be highly correlated with problem solving in the environment.
